OPEN CALL: The Wall 

The Wall  – 8th Edition – International Photography Competition

Open Call: The Cyprus Photographic Society – Pafos Branch organizes the international photography contest The Wall aiming to exhibit large pictures in an outdoor public space for an extended period of time. Through photographers’ contribution both from Cyprus and abroad, a wall in the city centre will be covered with 30 colour photos. The event is part of the programme of events of the Months of Photography Paphos (MoPP) photo festival. This is the 8th edition of the event.

HUGE VIEW OF YOUR PHOTOS: The photo installation will remain in place for 11 months and it is expected to be visited by more than 70 000 people.

BASICS: Send up to five colour photographs (landscape orientation only).

The theme could be either URBAN or STREET PHOTOGRAPHY.

PRIZE

1. Public Installation for 11 months.

Top 30 photographers will be exhibited in the installation in Pafos city center (main square) for 330 days. The position and duration of the exhibition maximizes the viewing of your photos. We estimate that more than 70 000 people will visit and see your work. Printing, mounding and installation are covered by the organizers. Credits and information about the artist will be displayed on the isntallation.

2. Projections

Top 60 photos will be projected in several events of the CPS in the main cities of Cyprus.

3.Publication

The project will be published in local magazines and newspapers.

JURY COMMITTEE

The photos will be assessed by a committee which comprises of the following 3 members:

Maro Kouri

Maro Kouri has been photographing and writing non-stop about social justice in the world for 30 years, focusing on Africa, Asia, Japan, Greece, the land of Maori and other indigenous tribes. Her work is presented in exhibitions internationally: in galleries, schools, bazaars, hotels, slums. She works with the international press: National Geographic, BBC, Der Spiegel, Journal du Dimanche, Newsweek, Vice, Days Japan, Vimagazino, Dagens Nyheter, CNN. Awards: UNESCO, Photojournalist Association of Greece (E.F.E), General Staff of the Army. International awards: 1st photojournalism contests Scoop, PX3, ND, LIFE magazine.

Joanna Madloch

Joanna Madloch is a New Jersey-based photographer, writer, and scholar with a PhD in Humanities, which she earned from Silesian University in Poland. She studied photography at both the International Center of Photography and the Penumbra Foundation in New York City. Currently, she teaches at Montclair State University, specializing in the creative process. She has authored over 30 scholarly articles and a book on Joseph Brodsky. She is currently working on a book about the image of the photographer in fiction. As a photographer, her focus is urban street photography. Her work has been exhibited in the United States, Europe, and Australia.

Taras Bychko

Taras Bychko was born in Lviv, Ukraine in 1987. Currently lives in Royal Tunbridge Wells, UK. He works in the genre of documentary and art photography, is a curator, teacher and judge of various international competitions, as well as a member of the international street collective Little Box Collective, co-founder of the group Ukrainian street photography. Ambassador of Fujifilm – X photographer. Author of two books: Sykhiv (Lviv, 2020) Two rooms (Lviv, 2021).

MAXIMIZED OPPORTUNITY TO WIN THIS YEAR

As we would like to see more photographers on The Wall,  there is a limit of only one photo per photographer to be displayed on the installation.

Therefore, top 30 photographers will be exhibited on the installation.

SUBMISSIONS DEADLINE:  15th NOVEMBER 2024 – 23:59 CET

TERMS & CONDITIONS

• Theme: Urban or Street Photography.

• Photo orientation: Landscape only. Photos will be displayed in a 2:3 scale format.

• Each photographer will have to send the photos in digital form electronically to the email thewallpafos@gmail.com  until the 15th November 2024 (via WeTransfer).

• If the photos depict individuals without their knowledge or without their approval, the responsibility lies to the photographer who owns the work and not the organizers.

• Each photographer can send up to five photographs (maximum).

• File naming: Each photo should be named using the photographers name.surname followed by a number (1-5) e.g. Mark.Brown1.jpg.

• The photos should be in high resolution (at least 3000pixels large side at 300dpi).

• The cost of participation in the competition is set at 20 euro for non members and 15 euro for CPS members. Participation without a paid entry fee will not be accepted.

• Each photographer can participate with only one entry (5 photos).

• The entry fee may be paid via paypal or bank transfer/deposit as explained above. In each case, a copy/photo of the payment receipt should be attached to the email with the participant’s photographs.

• The organizers reserve the right to use the selected photos for promotional reasons in the future, with reference to the photographer.

• Participations from abroad are mostly welcomed.

• There is no limitation of the place or time the photos have been captured.

• The maximum number of entries in the final exhibition of The Wall for each participant is 1 photo.

• The maximum number of entries in the projections for each photographer is 2 photos.

THOSE WHO PARTICIPATE IN THE COMPETITION AUTOMATICALLY DECLARE THAT THEY AGREE WITH THE FOLLOWING:

RESULTS / REPORTS / OTHER INFO

  • The results will be announced in the official website of the CPS-Pafos Branch (www.cpspafos.com), in the Official website of the CPS (www.cps.com.cy) and in social media. Also, an email with the results will be send to all participants.
  • Thirty photos will be selected for the exhibition.
  • Sixty photos will be selected for the projections.
  • The photos will be exhibited in the centre of Pafos city (Kennedy Square).
  • The projections will take place in main cities of Cyprus.
  • The opening of the installation/exhibition will be held in December 2024. Exact date will be announced soon.
  • The photos will be printed and installed for outdoor exposure in 50cm X 75cm.
  • The scale of the photos should be 2:3 (ready by the photographer) otherwise the curator of the exhibition will have to adjust the photo.
  • The organizers (CPS-PAFOS BRANCH) will bear the cost of printing and preparation of outdoor installation/exhibition.
  • The only cost for the photographer is the entry fee with the opportunity to have his/her work exhibited to thousands of viewers.
  • The results and exhibitions will be advertised in the Media and internet.
